Melbourne Beach Pier

As I work to plan another couple of trips to Florida I found myself looking through the images from March.  I definitely will be going back to Melbourne Beach to capture more images like this one.  There is a lot about this image that I like but when I go back I will be re-shooting this to correct what I do not like.

I’m sure current followers will be aware of my recent fascination with the piers in Florida.  I love exploring the coastline in search of a new pier and the chance for a beautiful sunrise/sunset image.  This pier is in the Indian River and faces West which allows me to grab those sunset images even on the East coast of Florida.

Looking at this image I just love the color that was developing as the sun passed the horizon.  The brilliant orange glow in the sky against the darkening blue of the clouds and water just works for me.  I am happy with the location of the sunset as it is right behind the pavilion at the end of the pier.  Even the lines in the image help focus the eye on that pavilion.

What I want to change is the horizon location itself.  I should have tried for either a higher viewpoint to bring separation between the top of the pier and the skyline, or gone lower and bury the skyline in the pier.  To me, the hint of the buildings in the skyline above the top rail along with the mast from the sailboat are distracting.  Hopefully on the next attempt I will be lucky enough to get a few more people on the pier.  I am enjoying the addition of the human element in my images.  It is a challenge I still need to work on.

Yesterday was another great Saturday.  I had plans to make a trip to a few state parks around Ithaca, NY but at the last minute decided I needed to get a few things done around the house before the rains arrived.  It was a good decision as I look out the window this morning watching the rain soak everything in sight.

In between my chores I managed to drag the camera out a a few times.  I spent both the morning and evening with the macro lens attached scouring the yard for those tiny, over-looked details.  This post is the result of my exploring.  I am probably beating this square format thing to death but I truly enjoy my macro images composed this way.

I also did not want to miss out on my state park plans (especially considering I went out Friday night and bought this year’s Empire Passport!) so I hopped up to Pixley Falls for some waterfall photography with my new filter setup.  Other than the park being very crowded with parents letting their kids climb everywhere (in some cases dangerous places) I managed to gather a few interesting images.  I’ll be processing those and posting later.

Butternut Creek Aqueduct, Old Erie Canal Park

From my first visit to the Old Erie Canal Park I have been visualizing this image of the aqueduct.  After I purchased the filter system with the neutral density filters I stopped back to capture my vision but did not succeed.  In my enthusiasm to use the filters I was not careful with my composition and came home with unusable images.

Yesterday I went back with a single purpose, to get the one image I wanted.  I took my time.  I was careful with my composition.  I reviewed my images to ensure I captured what I wanted.  Once I had ‘the image’, only then did I move to explore other views.  Slowing down paid off.  I didn’t rush to get as many photos as I could during my lunch hour.  I went with a purpose and was happy with just a few images that fulfilled my vision.

What I really wanted to capture in my image was the incredible stone work of the aqueduct.  I loved the way the midday sun illuminated the arches via the reflection off the creek.  The contrast of the stone with the Spring foliage and the blue sky was very striking.  I hate to warn you but I am sure I’ll be going back over the course of the summer.  It is too easy to get to during lunch and it helps me relax during the work week.
