Delta Lake State Park
The lone tree has been a photographic pursuit of mine for quite some time. This image isn’t exactly the one I have in my head but I like it. Combine this solitary tree, separate and distant from the other trees, with a winter scene to evoke an emotional response. I was looking for loneliness and/or solitude. The two different processing styles, I believe, convey each separately.
This first image is more about loneliness. The muted colors and matte finish push the image toward that feeling. The image has a slight cold tone to it that enhances the feeling. Although it is a sunset, the sun does not feel warm and inviting.
The second image I processed as monochrome. Removing the color takes away the impact it has on the image. The cold feeling is still there but only due to the visual clues in the image; i.e., the snow and ice. To me, this image has a stoic feel to it. The tree embraces its solitude.
Or maybe it is all in my head…

Beautiful pictures. I like both renderings.
Thanks
winter is the perfect time to fine lone trees. something about the bare branches make the trees seem stark in their alone-ness.
From the start of my photography I have been drawn to the bare tree. Thanks Dawn.
I prefer the color image, it’s quiet and peaceful. I find the b&w one more sad and depressing.
Interesting. I see them the opposite way. Which only reinforces my thought on how each person can “see” a different point of view, no matter what I intend. Cool.
I feel the “aloneness” in both shots. I agree with Michaela in preferring the color shot, no surprise there from me I suppose, however, I think the color sets the solitary tree apart even more than the B&W. In the color, you can see reddish brown in the brush surrounding the solitary tree, and the light of the setting sun slightly illuminates the background tree, setting the solitary one alone in its color, whereas in the black and white, they are united in the same color. Just my thoughts! Like you said we all see a little differently!
I do see what you and Michaela see in the images. Funny how my pre-conceived thoughts influenced my take on both versions…
