Streaking Bellamy

I swear the sun was shining bright through my windows. There were a few clouds in the sky, but it felt like the rain had passed. Time to grab a few sunset images before finding something for dinner.
I chose Bellamy Harbor as I was at Delta Lake the previous night. I needed to spread the love around to all my usual haunts. The sun was dropping into the clouds quicker than I would have liked as I rushed down the boulevard toward the harbor.
Damn! I missed it. Ten minutes quicker and I could have captured the sun.
My consolation prize? Streaky clouds in the sky changing color as the sun approached the horizon. I shouldn’t complain…

Waiting on the Sun

It has been a long week at work. I tell myself not go in early or stay late but habits are hard to break. There is work to be done, not enough people to get to it all and I have a guilty conscious that I should be doing more… so, my habit is hard for me to break.
I missed the colorful sunset on Wednesday and was determined to not miss another one. I could see bright spots of the sun trying to poke through the clouds. I went to Delta Lake State Park, if for nothing else than to breathe fresh air and stare across the lake doing nothing.
You get to follow along as I try to capture the colors of an almost sunless sunset. Lucky you!
It was an unusually warm evening and the park was empty. I suppose the clouds had something to do with the lack of people. Anyway, good for me as I had the run of the beach. There was ice on the lake but spots near the shore had open water. Ah, reflection photography, how can I refuse…
Seeing it All

I really like how the clouds turned out and their reflection in the water. The sunlight reflected in the ice is a nice anchor point with the patch of sunlight showing through the clouds. If you look on the right edge of the image near the horizon you can spot two people who I assume had been ice fishing. Personally, I wasn’t positive the ice was that thick.
My next couple of attempts were in portrait orientation. I wanted more sky and reflection in the view. And then I noticed the ripples in the sand at the edge of the water. Cool. Get those in an image as well…

I was hoping the clouds would break at the horizon and I would get a look at the sun as it slips over the horizon. My chances were looking slim so I wandered around for a different reflection view. The area on the right of the beach with the trees on the point I photograph so often had more open water.

I won’t mention how I broke through the ice and the sand was mushy enough to let my feet sink in up to my ankles. Luckily, I chose to wear the tall, waterproof boots this time. I managed to get myself out of that predicament, and still find a good angle for my image.
Time to wait for sunset. Fingers crossed.

And as I drove into the parking lot, the clouds were highlighted in a beautiful magenta color. I should have stayed ten more minutes.

Before and After
Photo Hunt/Challenge
This is your assignment, if you choose to accept. Those words and the theme music from Mission: Impossible are what is in my head when my friend Karma posts one of her photo hunts. The mission this time was before and after. My head was swimming with ideas all week. I didn’t get to all of the ideas so I may have to post again later.
My first thought, being primarily a landscape photographer, was before and after sunrise. The light changes drastically when the sun crosses the horizon and changes the mood of the scene. The conditions were not ideal Sunday morning but the temperature was more accommodating than on Saturday (I strongly dislike the cold).
I went to my go to place in Rome, Bellamy Harbor. I had other ideas for additional challenges I wanted to capture but the sunrise was first on my list. I got lucky as the fence preventing me from reaching my favorite spot at one end of the harbor had been rotated again allowing me to walk right in. I probably should have left the camera in one spot and waited but I’m not always good at waiting. These are basically the same view…

The two images are only thirty minutes apart. The first image is twenty minutes prior while the second image is ten minutes after the sun woke up for the day. Two different scenes of the harbor. I like the before image best.
My next idea had several opportunities for me. The after image for this scene is the only one that worked out. My thought was to show a winter scene before this weird winter thaw and what it looks like now. As much as I complain about the cold, the snow tends to “pretty up” a scene. I’m borrowing a previously posted image for the first one.

There were a few more stops along the Mohawk River Trail that I wanted to capture for the after image party but I miscalculated the view. I know, I should have pulled out my phone and looked up the before images, but it was such a beautiful day I didn’t want to ruin it by having my nose to my phone.
My last set of images for this photo hunt is a concept that showed up in my head this past week. I’m not positive what prompted it or how it appeared, other than I was hungry. I made chili yesterday. I still make enough to feed a family but it works for me as I freeze half and eat half for a few days at work. How does this fit the theme you ask? Well…

Other ideas I didn’t pursue; show a clock at 11:55am and 12:05pm, an image out the front window of the car and then the back window (that one required a quiet country road I could stop on), the straight out of camera image and the post-processed image… I could go on.
This was a fun photo hunt. I needed the challenge to wake up my brain. I think I have been sleep walking through my days lately. Thanks Karma! Looking forward to the next one… ;)

52-week Challenge
Week 5 – Shoot from Below
The challenge this week at 52 Frames was to Shoot from Below. Basically, change your perspective and capture an image from beneath the subject. I definitely have done this style while using my macro lens, and Daisy Time is a perfect example. But it isn’t the summer and as the week marched on I was running out of opportunities.
I had a pretty good idea for an image that I attempted this morning. I was at Bellamy Harbor and the main road into Rome utilizes a bridge over the barge canal. The concept was to incorporate one of the street lamps on the bridge with the moon in the background (with me being on the ground under the bridge). The composition was what I intended but I totally flubbed the focus (more on that later). I had other concepts to work on but they would need to wait until later in the day.
I go to Bellamy Harbor quite frequently. It is an easy location for me, roughly five minutes from my apartment, and I generally find an image worth capturing. I photograph the view down the barge canal which includes the Mill Street bridge practically every visit. What I haven’t done much of is capture the underside of the bridge. See, shoot from below…

After Bellamy Harbor I made my way over to the Mohawk River Trail. There were numerous opportunities for me for the various “challenges” I was planning on participating in this week. I also knew there were plenty of tall trees to use for my next image. I was looking for a pine tree or two.
If you went to the challenge page at 52 Frames you will notice there is an “extra challenge” that can be incorporated into your image. This weeks extra was to utilize leading lines. Leading lines are a compositional technique where human-made or natural lines lead the viewer’s eyes through a photograph to the subject or the heart of the image (borrowed from Adobe.com). I had one more concept I wanted to capture. I drove over to the International Sculpture Garden and walked to the water tower. Now, I have photographed the water tower numerous times. Mostly I focus on the ladder cage attached to one of the support legs. One of my latest captures can be viewed in this post Going Up?, but I didn’t want to repeat myself (completely) so I planned on a bigger view. It worked out well that the sun chased most of the clouds away today.

There are numerous photography “challenges” I am currently working to complete. This week’s challenge at 52 Frames is Shoot from Below. I had an idea this morning that I tried but didn’t nail the focus on the image (sad face). I have a few others that I will go capture but I’m waiting for the temps to improve just a little.
My friend Karma is back online and we gently convinced her we needed one of her photo hunts. They were always fun and generally made me think (which I probably don’t do enough of). You can read about the latest at Well Dam, I think I just came up with a photo hunt!. I probably have too many ideas I want to try and should focus on one, but I’m leaning toward trying as many as I can. Stop back and see how I do with this one…
I saw another post of a different weekly challenge and really want to play along. The challenge is about patterns and/or repetition in your image. Examples would be a row of fence posts or a pattern of rocks in a landscape. I know I have images in my archives but I want to get out and search for something new. Again, you’ll have to stop back to see what I find.

Right, I started off with those comments…
I work with a lot of people. I interact with most of them on a daily basis, but I don’t know a lot about them. Case in point – there was an after work get together at a local bar to celebrate two employees recent retirement. I ended up talking with a few of the younger engineers and discovered they are bookaholics like myself. We ended up discussing various books they have recently read, what types of reading they enjoy (a good portion are sci-fi aficionados like myself), and exchanged a few recommendations. I knew we shared a fondness for video games but sharing books brings better conversations to the table. I have a few more books to get and read after that night.
I’m still processing “clutter” from a daily prompt two weeks ago (Clutter, Clutter Everywhere…). I see more of it around my apartment and I’m trying to determine how best/how much I want to tackle. But this process is adding to the clutter in my head… I can’t win.
I’m still processing where I want to be. I’m not a fan of being cold. As much as I like winter images, going out there in the cold is a big deterrent. My original plan was to move toward the south and warmer weather after selling the house. The sale happened four years ago! WTH!
I troll the job sites looking for the next opportunity but generally stop short of pulling the trigger. I’m not positive what is holding me back. I think it is a reluctance for change. Maybe it is a general laziness. I would have to put in some effort to pursue a new opportunity and if it required moving, that is a whole other can of worms… ha ha ha
I see the sun starting to burn through the clouds and there are patches of blue sky. I’ve talked your ear off enough for today. I have a few chores around the apartment to finish and then I need to find those images for all the challenges.
