Hunt for Spring

Floral, Midday, Macro

Photo hunt time! Karma has challenged us to show her what spring looks like where we live. You can check out her post for the hunt at Signs of Spring Photo Hunt. She included an additional challenge, for those brave enough to partake, of only using a prime lens if you have one (or set your zoom to one focal length). I accept!

The use of the prime lens fits in nicely with my recent love for my 50mm prime. But that is not the lens I chose to use, as my macro lens is also prime (105mm). I needed the macro, as my typical signs of spring are the flowers pushing through the winter blahs.

Although the weather has been crazy this past week, Saturday managed to be sunny and slightly warm. My “go-to” spot for early spring floral images is the rural cemetery. I can usually find daffodils, grape hyacinths, and a crocus or two. Upon arrival, my initial thought was that I would venture out without finding any images to capture. I wandered around, and I was rewarded with quite a few signs of spring…

And if you managed to make it all the way to the end of this post…

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
and twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
in such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
what wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

Red Umbrellas

Animal Kingdom, Walt Disney World

I really like the contrast of the red umbrella against the greenery of Animal Kingdom. I have a tendency to capture images of the umbrellas when I’m in the park. After processing the image the other day I chose to look through my archive for additional scenes. Once I saw the this one, which included a reflection, how could I not share… 🙂

Delta Lake State Park

The computer has been rebuilt. Still working through application installs and configuration, but it is functioning. Although, going through this process has highlighted the age my computer. Maybe it is related to me scouring the internet for a replacement “in case” I could not revive this bad boy. I have a feeling I eventually will do something crazy…

Work was long, even on a short week, so the call of the sunset brought me to Delta Lake. A few other individuals were on the beach enjoying the show presented by the setting sun. Once again I chose to stay with my 50mm prime lens. I’m loving the images I get with this lens.

Rollercoaster Weather

Mohawk River Trail

I wish Mother Nature would make up her mind. We went from spring-like weather back to winter, and the forecast for today is back to spring. It was hinting at crazy weather in the middle of last week, but then the full-on crazy appeared on Friday. My phone alerts were going nuts during work, but the show didn’t hit our area until late in the afternoon.

I woke up Saturday morning with close to eight inches of snow on the ground and more on the way. I had to get my shovel out of the garage, as I had assumed I would not need it until later in the year. Around noon, I ventured back outside to clean off another three to four inches of the white stuff.

Sunday morning was a different story. No new snow, but dang, was it cold? Single digits made it difficult to drag myself to the grocery store. I generally try to get there early before they get busy (not a fan of crowds). On my way home, I noticed the “sparkling” trees along the Mohawk River as the sun was making its presence known. I quickly put the groceries away, grabbed the camera, and headed back out.

The Mohawk River Trail passes close behind the car wash down the street from me. I knew the scene I wanted to capture (hopefully, the camera will see what I see). I kept the 50mm prime lens on the camera. I’m finding, I like that focal length. I took a few images of the trail, and then I jumped back in the car to go to Bellamy Harbor. Unfortunately, the city had not plowed any of the parking areas down at the harbor. Oh well, at least I grabbed the view that caught my eye…

Gliding

Epcot, Walt Disney World

A Disney image is all I’m able to process at the moment. I wish it was because I was in my happy place, but sadly, my computer crashed Thursday evening. I’ve spent the last few days trying to recover the system, but eventually had to give up. Luckily for me, I have a laptop for travel, but the only images still on it are from my Disney trip last September.

Don’t worry, I have everything backed up so I will not lose any data, but rebuilding the system or, in the most drastic case, buying a new one is on hold until I can get my Lightroom catalog off the secondary hard drive. I ordered an external HDD enclosure so I could copy everything to an external HDD. Anyway, enough nerd talk.

I’m a fan of the monorail system at Walt Disney World. I don’t have the patience for certain types of photography, i.e., wildlife, but I will wait for the next monorail to glide past me. I’m looking forward to my next trip to WDW in May, as the updates to Epcot around Spaceship Earth have been completed. This will give me more opportunities for monorail images… 🙂
