Bellamy Harbor Park is where the barge canal meets the Mohawk River at the southern end of Rome. At the western end of the harbor there are water control gates for the canal. At times I think they intrude on the scenery of the harbor, but on Saturday morning, with a fresh coat of snow, I think they created their own scene. After I grabbed my wide-angle view of the park I captured a few images of the gates… the Gates of Rome…

We received quite a bit of snow last week but the weather forecast for this weekend was rain with freezing rain mixed in. There was a good cover of snow on the landscape and I wanted to photograph Bellamy Harbor Park before the rain washed much of it away. My chances for capturing a sunrise were slim, especially with the call for rain early in the morning, but with a decent cloud cover, the park (and the city) have a glow about them that could produce an interesting image.
I arrived at the park an hour before the official sunrise and I knew immediately I would not be seeing the sun. I put on my snowshoes, mounted the camera to the tripod and traipsed across the snow in search of my pictures. I looked for a few different views for this area (I think I found some) before heading to my favorite spot for the wide angle shot of the harbor. I walked around the park until the “official” sunrise time to confirm I would not be seeing it. With the “no show” of the sun, I packed everything back into the car, stopped for a coffee and headed back home. It was a good morning…

As I know I have mentioned more times than anyone would like to hear, I’m fortunate to work close to the Old Erie Canal Park in DeWitt, NY. It is my escape from the work day. I can go over during lunch and spend close to an hour getting lost in the creek, under the aqueduct or simply walk the trail along the canal. Even in winter it provides solace during a hectic day. Charges the batteries so the remaining few hours of the work day won’t drag me under. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy where I work, but there are times everyone needs a little peace and quiet.
Often when I go to the park I am looking for the grand landscape view. Most days I can find it. Even though there are limited areas to explore you can find different looks and create a fresh new image. Other days I find my escape by grabbing long exposures of the water under the aqueduct. There is so much detail in the aqueduct structure and the contrast between that and the silky smooth water always fascinates me. Part of the reason I purchased the 10-stop ND filter was to be able to get that long exposure during my retreats to the canal park.
And then, especially in winter, I can find very cool looking details in the creek. I loved how the ice formed on this sprig of a tree branch. I can imagine as the water levels changed or the weight of new snow dipped the branch deeper into the water the ice grew. We are suppose to a patch of warmer weather this weekend. I’ll have to return early next week to see if this chuck of ice survived…

Driving back home from my pre-sunrise photography adventure (see yesterday’s post) I couldn’t help but stop at the train station in Utica. As I entered the city from the East, the sun was breaking the horizon and aligning itself with the tracks. All this was clearly illuminated in my rear view mirror. The opportunity was knocking and I had to open the door. I was rewarded with some puddles of water from melting snow (I’m going to assume the use of rock salt to help that process). Although the thermometer was reading zero degrees I had a thought for a sunrise image that I wanted to capture. Checking the weather and the Photographer’s Ephemeris, I felt today was a good day to try. There is a area along the barge canal in Herkimer, NY that has been developed and includes the Waterfront Grille. Looking at Google Maps earlier in the week had me thinking I would be able to get next to the canal, have the restaurant and the sunrise over the water in the same view. I got lucky with the open water still in the canal as well as the great chunks of broken ice along the edge. Normally, on my sunset images I have the sun in the scene but for some reason I love the colors in the hour before sunrise and never stick around to capture the actual sun… LOL

Monochrome Winter
I have begun transitioning this blog over to my portfolio website. I created that site almost two years ago due to running out of image space on WordPress. I have still been using WordPress to publish my ramblings but it is time to fully embrace the new site. I will continue to publish on this version of the blog for a while and will maintain it as an archive of my growth over the past several years…

It was another of those moments yesterday as I traveled to work. I have viewed this scene from the on-ramp to the Thruway for quite a long time. The casino by me built a parking lot for their employees and they would bus them back and forth. I haven’t seen this lot being used in a few years, other than the occasional semi-driver needing to rest.
With the fresh coat of snow and supposedly the full moon (damn overcast skies), I turned the car at the intersection to track down my image. From the moment I spied the three shelters in the parking lot I knew when I eventually stopped to capture the picture, it would end up as a black & white. I have been collecting my B&W winter scenes in a folder called Monochrome Winter. I think it might be time to create that gallery here on this site…
