Snow Along the Canal

Monochrome Winter

A friend at work yesterday was telling me about the view along the canal he passed on his way into work. It definitely sounded like something I would want to capture. I was able to leave work a few hours early and I made my way to this glorious location. I was off only a little as the scene he described ended up being about a mile down the road from where I entered the canal trail. I didn’t walk the trail far enough but I now know exactly where I need to go next time. I don’t think I can call my exploration a fail as I was able to capture these images along the canal.

Currents

Lock 20, Barge Canal

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post my adventure for a sunrise began at Lock 20 on the Barge Canal. The morning light combined with the clouds was creating some beautiful colors. On the downstream side of the lock the canal was no longer frozen although there were ice floaties… yes, that is a technical term. LOL

Due to the ice layer further down the canal an upper level current was swirling the floating ice pieces. My trick was to get the right amount of time on the exposure to show this current (like a star trail in a night sky photograph) without blowing the highlights near the horizon.  The moments just prior to sunrise and the cloud cover allowed a 15 second exposure.  As you can see in the bottom of the image, there is a very cool dynamic with the current.

Cityglow Sunrise

Barge Canal looking toward Utica, NY

I got my butt out early Saturday! I made a plan and actually followed through with it. Too bad the approaching front didn’t know my plan… 😦

I wanted to catch the sunrise from the Barge Canal. The past few mornings have been wonderful for sunrises (at least as I looked through the shop windows at work). I noticed there was still a thin layer of ice on the barge canal and thought it would add some nice broken reflections for the sunrise.

At least the ice was still in the canal. As you can see from the picture the clouds were rolling in fast and there was very little of the rising sun that made it though to me. The color in the sky is a little sun but mostly the glow from the city lights of Utica.  I grabbed a few images while the time for sunrise approached but when the sun should have been visible there was nothing but clouds.  I did like the thin strip of white that moved through as I captured this thirty second exposure.

I’m listening to the wind race outside this morning as I write this post so I do not think I will have a chance for a sunrise this morning.  I was spoiled that week in Florida with all the sunrise opportunities.  I know there are pictures here for me I just need to find them!

Brrr!

Barge Canal Area

It was a little cold this morning, just below freezing, but I wanted to stop before groceries to grab some images.  My original thought was to get nice, moody images as there was a lot of fog in the area.  My plans quickly changed as noticed the great frost on everything as I was driving down to the canal (the canal is my go to place for foggy, moody images).

I switched lenses to my macro lens and went out exploring around the parking area for the canal trail.  It didn’t take me very long to find some beautiful subjects.  I have a habit of going for the simple subjects but I think it definitely works for these.

I did manage to grab those moody shots as well but I will save those for another post. I tried a new location along the canal and it paid off for me… 🙂

The Difference in Minutes

Lock 20, Barge Canal

Another GREAT morning! I used the excuse to stop into work early to get myself motivated to go exploring. Yesterday’s early morning run was a success and I wanted to continue my streak (is two a streak?). I had the thought of capturing the tug boats docked at Lock 20 of the Barge Canal with the sunrise behind but that didn’t work out. Apparently they were docked there to be removed from the water.

Luckily for me the sky was putting on a show all of its own! The two images are only 15 minutes apart but the changes in the sky are beautiful. I captured one from above the lock and one from the lock looking down the canal.  It didn’t hurt that it was almost 55 degrees out this morning.  It is suppose to rain this afternoon but the start of the day was awesome!

Canal Before Breakfast

Barge Canal

I listened to that little voice again. The one that tells me to stop and grab the picture. I was on my way to breakfast before groceries and the sun was just starting to peek around the clouds after sunrise. I knew the view down the canal would be worth a stop. The rumbling in the tummy could wait a few minutes. I detoured down to the canal where the bridge support in the water is accessible by climbing over a stone bridge built by some kids. The calm waters provided some nice reflections.
