The Swimmin’ Hole

Robert H. Treman State Park

The reward for walking the complete circuit around the gorge in Robert H. Treman State Park is the swimming area. The area is bounded by the Lower Falls and a man made dam which creates the swimming hole. It is very idyllic and the amount of people in the area on a Monday morning attests to its popularity. I spent a fair amount of time photographing the various features but my favorite is this view from below the dam looking toward the Lower Falls. I like having the people in the image to lend a sense of scale.

Railroad Triptych

Weekly Photo Challenge – Triptych

I went a little crazy in selecting this weeks theme for our weekly photo challenge, or more appropriately, our Club 52. I thought creating a triptych would be something that would push us in a story telling direction. I always read about how the really good images tell a story or can provide enough of a hint to allow the viewers mind to fill in a story of their own.

Not that I always believe Wikipedia provides the best information it does at times help me with ideas or concepts so here is what it has to say about triptych. For me a triptych is a way of displaying related or similarly themed images. I have created one once before when I was attempting a 365 Project but it was more of an experiment rather than a statement. You can see it here if you are interested.

Basically, a triptych is a work of art, or digital photograph in my case, divided into three sections. The center image is generally flanked by two images of smaller size in support of its theme. This is the original intent although I have seen some wonderful compositions that are organized in different ways but for mine I had to stay closer to normal. Not that I didn’t try other arrangements, I just could not make them work… lol!

So here is my triptych of the railroad line…

Small Cascade

Robert H. Treman State Park

This is the week of my plant’s shutdown. Every year they schedule one but it has been quite a few years since they actually followed through and gave all but the maintenance crew the week off. Luckily Monday and Friday are holidays so I only have to consume three vacation days.

I decided to take this mid-year vacation as a sign for me to explore more of New York’s state parks. After the success of my state park trips last year I went ahead and purchased the New York Empire Passport which allows me entry into just about every state park until March 31st next year. With three visits already under my belt, I am a third of the way to paying back the cost of the passport. This was a great investment for me… 🙂

On Monday I journeyed down to Ithaca to visit Robert H. Treman State Park which is just a few miles south of the city. From what I had read on the park site there would be some opportunities for waterfall images along the 4 mile round trip hike. What I didn’t get from the site was the fact that even the gorge trail ventured up into the top of the gorge in the steep narrow sections. I got quite the workout. I arrived right at 9am which was a good thing as the temps reached 85+ by midday. I was in the park for a little over three hours as stopping with the camera to capture images does tend to slow me down.

I’ll sprinkle in the pictures as I process some of my favorites but will try not to overload everyone… 😉
