Snow Along the Canal

Monochrome Winter

A friend at work yesterday was telling me about the view along the canal he passed on his way into work. It definitely sounded like something I would want to capture. I was able to leave work a few hours early and I made my way to this glorious location. I was off only a little as the scene he described ended up being about a mile down the road from where I entered the canal trail. I didn’t walk the trail far enough but I now know exactly where I need to go next time. I don’t think I can call my exploration a fail as I was able to capture these images along the canal.

In Like a Lion…

I realize the saying is usually attributed to the month of March but I am hoping that by using it for the first snow of winter it will apply to the whole season. Listening to the weather forecast for Sunday and Monday as I walked around on Saturday in 66 degree weather made me wonder what the heck is going on. Surely someone was trying to pull a HUGE practical joke. I guess Mother Nature managed a doozy…

As much as I was enjoying being snuggled under the blanket reading a good book I didn’t want to let the first snow go un-photographed. As soon as the wind died down and the light managed to find its way through the clouds I grabbed the camera and headed out into the backyard. The temperatures were warm enough for the snow to be the heavy, clingy snow that manages to hang on every surface. I wanted to capture that look. This series of images are from around the yard (I wanted some pics but was not brave enough to venture farther).

Backyard Exploring

Saturday morning was perfect for being outside. The sun was shining, there was little wind and the temps were heading toward 40+. I realized I have lost some of that excitement and naiveté with my photography.  I’m looking for that one great image and not exploring all the hidden images around me.  I use to explore more when I first started.  So I went out exploring…

I also have abandoned some of the unique series that I started and it was time to get back into those as well.  As I mentioned yesterday I am currently influenced by my reading of an Ansel Adams book, so I present Monochrome Winter continued…

Barbed Flakes

The first day of the new year was very unclear of itself. There was snow. There was wind. The sun showed its face. And there were a few moments of calm.

During one of those calm moments I ventured outside with the macro lens. It has a very long lens hood which would protect the front of the lens from the elements. I also wanted to see what I could capture of the new snow. I ended up behind the house pointing the camera at the fence since it was the only thing not swaying in the wind.

Frequent readers of my ramblings will know my penchant for the barbed wire fence around my yard. It didn’t disappoint me yesterday. The snow gathered on the barbs and if you look closely you can make out the individual flakes. As I often do, my winter images end up as B&W. I like the clarity it brings to the image.

This is another entry in my growing Squared series as well as the first installment this year for my old Monochrome Winter series.  The MW series did not receive any love from me last year and I hope to correct that going forward.

It has been far too long since I last ventured out with the camera. Even my planned project to get me back in the grooved failed and I only have myself to blame. Recently I found it far to easy to succumb to the weak excuses I contrived in my head to not stop the car or just stay inside.

I miss it. Whenever I am out with the camera I truly enjoy it. While I was putting the galleries together for my new website I realized how much more I captured when I knew less than I do now that I know more (or at least I think I know more). So this morning as I was shoveling the driveway I knew I would be back outside as the sun came closer to the horizon. I eased back into it with a walk around the house and neighborhood. I’m planning on going up the Delta Lake after dinner today (not only for pictures but to walk off the food I plan to eat…). No more excuses!

So I bring you this winter’s first Monochrome Winter image. Long time followers will not be surprised it also includes barbed wire. I still am fascinated by it… lol!
