Autumn Falls at Chittenango

Chittenango Falls State Park

I spent Saturday morning chasing autumn colors and a few of the near-by state parks. I started the day at Green Lakes, passed through Pools Brook and finally made my way to Chittenango Falls. The morning sun and sky was starting to give way to the approaching clouds which was going to ruin any hopes of a blue backdrop to my images. Still, I was there for the autumn colors and attempted to capture what I images I could find…

Delta Autumn

Delta Lake State Park

I never wanted to rush through the summer. I was happy enjoying the sun filled days and long hours of daylight. But, I can tell you since I spotted the first leaves changing color and dropping to the ground, I have been waiting for the peak of autumn to arrive. In Upstate NY there is a relatively short window of opportunity to grab images of autumn. Typically, I’m in Florida at Walt Disney World during this window but not this year.

I have been enjoying walks along the Old Erie Canal trail at lunch searching for this sections of color reflected in the waters. This weekend I plan to hit a few of the state parks around Central NY as the foliage map indicates near peak/peak conditions throughout most of the state. But last night I ran up to Delta Lake to catch the last 30 minutes of light.

There is a section of the park at the entrance where as the sun sets it will illuminate the trees along the water providing a multitude of photographic goodness. This view checks quite a few boxes, i.e., autumn colored trees, reflections and last night mirror-like water with sun rays. I got lucky too! There was the perfect amount of clouds in the sky. To say I enjoyed the last 30 minutes of the day would be an understatement…

Walking the Canal

Old Erie Canal Park, DeWitt, NY

It felt like I hadn’t been there in forever, which, surprisingly was most of the summer. I went for a walk during lunch earlier in the week at the Old Erie Canal Park near work. I was thinking I would be able to find a little autumn color and luckily I hadn’t missed it. The day was absolutely beautiful with the right amount of cloud cover to provide the right light for my images. Truthfully, it was hard to go back to work…

Aerial Clayton

Clayton, NY

My friend Justin has a drone. Lately we have been talking about capturing images with it and how to use it to create high dynamic range (HDR) pictures. He had the opportunity this past weekend to explore the area around Clayton, NY while his wife was busy being a bridesmaid. It’s not as bad as it sounds. He wasn’t a part of all the festivities over the weekend which allowed him to fly around in the mornings. He was there for the important evens.

He let me import all his images into Lightroom so I could show him what can be done with all those exposure brackets he captured. We reviewed all the pics during lunch but last night I went to town and processed a few of my favorites (there are more still to work on). Justin doesn’t claim to be a photographer but he has a damn good eye…

Delta Setting

Delta Lake State Park

A quick, short run up to Delta Lake for the sunset yields a few interesting images. This late in the season the park is mostly deserted which, to be truthful, is how I enjoy it best. The water level is a little low allowing me to walk the shoreline looking for different views. I tried to be a little creative with the last image combining an in focus view with one intentionally out of focus. My attempt at something dreamy
