Yesterday was another great Saturday. I had plans to make a trip to a few state parks around Ithaca, NY but at the last minute decided I needed to get a few things done around the house before the rains arrived. It was a good decision as I look out the window this morning watching the rain soak everything in sight.
In between my chores I managed to drag the camera out a a few times. I spent both the morning and evening with the macro lens attached scouring the yard for those tiny, over-looked details. This post is the result of my exploring. I am probably beating this square format thing to death but I truly enjoy my macro images composed this way.
I also did not want to miss out on my state park plans (especially considering I went out Friday night and bought this year’s Empire Passport!) so I hopped up to Pixley Falls for some waterfall photography with my new filter setup. Other than the park being very crowded with parents letting their kids climb everywhere (in some cases dangerous places) I managed to gather a few interesting images. I’ll be processing those and posting later.

Yesterday morning started off way better than the forecast had predicted. We were suppose to get some rain, possibly not until later in the day, but looking out the window there was no clue what was on the way. There was a nice heavy dew on the ground and because I was a little lazy about mowing my lawn I had an enormous amount of dandelions sprouting up everywhere. Yes, it was time to put the macro lens on the camera, dust off the tripod and go out dandelion hunting. OK, maybe it wasn’t as dramatic as all that and yes, I have been consistently shooting the little weeds, but it did sound nice, right?
I was looking for something a little different to capture. I also thought I would try the new focus stacking option of my camera. This is an option that will change the focal plane backwards and forwards from the initial location, combine all the images and output a file that has a greater band of in-focus in the image than would normally be possible. I did manage to get an image, but I am still processing it so you are being forewarned, it is coming… 🙂
Today’s image just looked cool to me. The morning dew was hanging on the the dandelion and giving it a subdued look. I focused on the seed at the center of the head but due to my orientation some of the white parachute ends are also in focus. If you zoom in on the image you will be able to see all the water droplets clinging to the dandelion.

While I was away on a business trip I had some extra time in the morning before I needed to head over to the supplier I was visiting so I was able to read a few more articles every morning. One article in particular at Digital Photography School lead me down a path and has me thinking a little more about how and what I photograph. It was Do Visual Push-Ups Everyday to Grow as a Photographer by Valérie Jardin. This of course brought me to her website and now another photographer I will be checking in on to read more articles.
What really struck me was the projects she uses to keep herself learning and exploring. The I thought about all the various projects or themes I have started over the past few years and how I do not keep them going. I get caught in trying to capture the big, beautiful sunset or the expansive landscape and forget about the little images all around me.
Last night after I got home from the trip and unpacked everything I grabbed the camera for a walk around the yard. There were quite a lot of opportunities and I decided I need to work on my In The Yard series. Images I capture while walking my yard and fields around the house. Of course, the first one I really liked was from the barbed wire fence. I guess you can’t break with tradition…
