Juno Beach Pier

Well, I’m back in Florida! It seems like only yesterday that I was in the sunshine state. Although that moniker leaves a little to be desired as I have been fighting the wind and the rain since I arrived. I needed to fly down so I could help my Mom drive back to New York. I decided to spend a few days exploring the Treasure Coast and maybe even a small stop at Disney before I head over to my Mom’s place.
The last time I explored the East Coast of FL I made it as far as Jupiter. This time I booked a room at Juno Beach as I have seen some amazing pics from this area. Even though the weather has not been cooperating I have done a few location scouting for the next time I can make it down this far along the coast. My first morning was spent fighting the wind and ocean spray to grab some images of Juno Beach Pier. This one is during the morning blue hour about forty minutes before the official sunrise.

Mornin’ Lights

Although it seems I am always looking out the car windows for a photographic opportunity and I have mentioned before how I see differently now due to photography, I did not notice the new lights on the General Cable water tower near Bellamy Harbor Park. From what I have been able to piece together via Google search, the city of Rome accepted a gift from the Rome Common Council to add lights to the old General Cable water tower in Bellamy Harbor East.It is kinda cool as the lights change color in interesting combinations.
With Saturday probably being the only day this weekend with decent weather I went out early to grab some pictures at dawn. I liked the view of the tower as I looked down the street. I was still standing by the car deciding the best vantage point to capture the tower. Luckily it is a dead end street with barely any traffic at 6:30am on a Saturday. I plopped the tripod down in the street and grabbed this image.

I apparently was a little focused on my own routine when I heard a voice behind me ask if I was performing a survey. I explained I was only a photographer trying to grab a few pics of the new lights on the water tower. I was then regaled with a story about this cool camera he wanted that practically sees in the dark. It was out of his league and he only had the phone on his camera to take pictures. I attempted to interject that I take quite a few pics with my phone’s camera but the story was being told and any interruptions were not to be tolerated. After a few minutes I explained I had to get to my next location before I lost the light. We parted ways and I headed across the walkway bridge to my favorite spot for a panoramic view of the park.
After I was happy with my capture (last image in this post) I finally did something I had been thinking of doing for a while now. I climbed the embankment for the bridge over the canal and walked to the middle to get a shot of Bellamy Harbor park from that elevated vantage point. In my head it was going to be awesome. As you can see from the image below, it didn’t turn out so great. I will have to make my way back up there once the gates in the canal are lowered. I think this view will be different without those huge obstacles in my way. I guess the good point of the story is I overcame my hesitation and did it!

This last image is the view I can capture from the canal wall in front of the gates. The wind was picking up as the morning passed on but I like how it rippled the water. I’m always a fan of the reflected lights on the water and even though it is a wide angle shot, you can see the effect of the new lights on the water tower. I like that the city is investing in this park. It might not be the greatest location in the city but I appreciate a place to get away from everything.

A beautiful morning where I actually got my butt moving and out the door. I wasn’t positive of my destination as I climbed into the car but I wanted to catch the sunrise or at the very least the wonderful blue hour before the sun breaks the horizon. I took a gamble that the Hinckley Reservoir would be almost full considering all the rain we have been having and it did pay off.
There was a nice layer of clouds in the sky to grab the pre-dawn color and the location of the sunrise allowed me to get a nice contrast between the approaching morning light and the darker, cooler tones still trapped behind the pillars. It doesn’t hurt that the reservoir is only 20 minutes from the house!

A Stop on the way to Work

The past few mornings have started off with beautiful sunrises. I was getting tired of watching the sky show on my way to work so yesterday morning I stopped at Bellamy Harbor Park to capture some images. I did not have to be to work my usual amount of early. It was a great decision. Starting my day with the camera was definitely the way to go…
The first view is where the Mohawk River meets the barge canal. I was a little early for the morning colors but I really like the lights along the pedestrian bridge and their reflection in the water. The long exposure also helps create an interesting pattern in the water below the small dam.
The second image is Bellamy Harbor Park proper as the sun starts throwing that color into the sky. There was slight movement in the clouds which creates the blurred effect in the sky due to the 25 second exposure.
I could have stayed at the park all morning. When I got to work there was a better display in the sky with the sun peaking through the breaking clouds. I know that would have looked good as the backdrop to either of these images. Maybe this weekend I’ll get lucky…

Sunrise along the Thruway
Have you ever had that image in your head, of a scene you pass every day, and when you finally capture the image it is nothing like you visualized? This image would be that one for me. I have passed this solitary tree in a pasture on my way to work for over a year. I have envisioned it with the sunrise in the background and this majestic looking silhouette standing alone in the field. This is not quite what was in my head.
Yesterday morning the clouds and sun were putting on a good show in the morning sky. The timing was right and my courage was running high. I stopped the car along the thruway and grabbed the camera. The pasture fence was only 40 feet from the edge of the road and I was wearing my waterproof boots. The tree was not quite as tall as I envisioned. I though the silhouette would be more into the sky. The sun could have been more to the left creating a little more drama in the sky.
If I had access to the pasture I could have improved all those negatives, but from my vantage point on the side of Interstate 90, this is what I captured. I’m sure there will be more opportunities. I’m sure there will be better views to capture. Now that I have done it once, the next one will not be so difficult…
