Grey Heron in Melbourne, FL
Geiger Point, Melbourne, FL
I ended my vacation where I started it, at Geiger Point next to the 192 causeway in Melbourne, FL. It was a great holiday vacation! The weather was fantastic. The Airbnb rental was amazing. I had a relaxing time with family and still managed to get out and photograph the sunrise and sunsets every day. It doesn’t get any better than that…
This image is a three exposure, HDR creation. I probably could have processed the +1EV image but I didn’t want to have to push the highlights and shadows too far to achieve the look I envisioned. I wanted to include the detail of the rocks in the foreground and with them being severely backlit, it was a good excuse to blend a few exposures. I have been using Aurora HDR by Skylum and it has allowed me to effortlessly blend any number of exposures into a great image. Typically, I only need to due a few post-processing tweaks after I create the HDR version of my image.

Cocoa Beach, FL
Near the end of my holiday vacation in Florida I was able to make it Cocoa Beach. Honestly, it was for the pier at sunrise. I was driving back from dropping my son off at the Orlando airport the previous day and could not believe the colors in the sky. The timing was off as I was unable to get to the coast (Cocoa Beach) before the sun climbed too high into the sky. So I was hoping for the same conditions the next day. They were not as good as I had seen driving but I was able to make do with what I got… 🙂
Riverside Park, Indialantic, FL
When you are on the East Coast of Florida you have to search out unique locations to capture the sunset. Luckily, I know some pretty nice spots along the Indian River that never let me down during the sunset. Of course, it helps that the sky really gets into the show…
Kiwanis Park at Geiger Point, Melbourne, FL
The drive to Florida was thankfully uneventful other than a lot of delays through the highly populated areas in New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. Once we were able to set the cruise control south of Richmond, VA, the trip went by fairly quickly. After getting everything settled in the Airbnb I snuck out for a few pictures of the moon rise over Indialantic, FL. I’m really excited to explore fore of my favorite locations along the East Coast of Florida…
The house is quiet this Christmas morning. The cats have enjoyed their breakfast and are off lounging on various pieces of furniture, some of mine and some of theirs. That isn’t to say they were not a little vocal in wanting me to get out of bed to feed them. I’ll sit them down and explain how this is suppose to work later… LOL.
The last few years I have spent Christmas in Florida. In 2014 the kids and their Mom went down to Grandma’s to spend the holiday and it kinda started a little tradition. I managed to join them in 2015 and it fueled a wonderful obsession with photographing the Florida coast. Most of us went back down in 2016 although Ian had a new job and was unable to get away. This year Grandma decided she wanted to spend the holidays back up here in New York so we really didn’t have an excuse to travel. Although, as I write this post, I’m thinking next year needs to be back down in Florida…
Merry Christmas!
