The Wild Center

The Wild Center, Tupper Lake, NY

It is amazing to me how I can live so close to something and barely know that it exists.  Granted it is not right around the corner but a 2-1/2 hour drive to experience something is not that far out of my way.  The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, NY is one of those experiences.  I had seen it advertised on TV one morning and finally made the effort to drive up into the Adirondacks.  It was definitely worth the trip.

Beside being able to experience this unique center, the scenery along the way was just as good.  I believe it took an extra half hour to make it home as I continued to stop at almost every parking area with a camera icon!  🙂  Definitely check out the link for the center as I am sure I would not do it any justice with my words…

Tupper Lake

Tupper Lake

Sunday was the day to finally visit The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, NY.  I am still working on the images from the center and you will have to wait for a later post to learn more.  The drive to the center was very scenic and provide numerous opportunities to stop and capture the beautiful views of the numerous lakes in the Adirondacks.

I spotted this lone, little island in Tupper Lake as the drive up was almost over.  Obviously it was a necessary stop on the way home.  The first image is a view from a small scrap of land jutting out into to lake accessible from the roadside parking area.  It is not the view I saw on the drive up but I liked the profile of the island and tree.  This is actually the second shot of this view.  The first was rather bland but as I turned to walk away the sun chose that moment to peak out from behind a cloud and illuminate just the island.

The second image is the one that caught my eye initially.  I had to walk a little ways up the road from the parking area in order to get the little island between the two islands in the distance.  BTW – there are homes on both of those islands!  I wasn’t rewarded by the sun with some singular illumination in this image but the clouds make up for it I think.  🙂

Peaceful Reflection

Old Erie Canal Park

I hadn’t been over to the Old Erie Canal Park during lunch in what seemed like forever.  It was time for me to get off my lazy butt during lunch and enjoy the scenery available to me.  I typically do not venture far along the canal trail as I can find enough to entertain me right at the aqueduct.  I did run into a couple of volunteers who were offering water and an opportunity to help in the expansion of the trail system between Dewitt and Camillus.  Considering how much I enjoy the trails as a diversion from work and while I am home, I was more than happy to help out.

After doing my part, I ventured down into Butternut Creek to get some images of the aqueduct.  I must have hundreds by now but I never fail to find something new to capture.  On this day there was a brilliant reflection in the water.  By combining my polarizing filter with the 4-stop ND filter I was able to get a 2.5 second exposure which enhanced the reflection in the moving water.  I decided not to fully engage the circular polarizer as doing so would have cut some of the reflection and enhance the view of the creek bed.  I wanted the bright reflection!

Morning in Rome

Delta Lake Dam & Bellamy Harbor
Rome, NY

This was going to be the morning when I realized my sunrise concept from last weekend.  I allowed myself to sleep in a little so as not to get to the dam too early.  There were some clouds starting to move in so my hopes were high.  The first image is the one I envisioned.  The sun is far enough North to almost rise over the Delta Lake dam.  What I discovered after grabbing this image is that the viewing angle is too low.  There is more color and drama in the sky behind the dam, closer to the horizon.  I wasn’t about to climb a tree to get a better view.

I didn’t let it discourage me!  I packed up my camera and headed down to Bellamy Park in the South of Rome.  Every morning as I drive over the barge canal bridge on my way out of Rome I get a great view of the canal and the park as the sun is throwing color into the sky.  I was hoping I could get there before the sun crested the trees.

The first image is a single shot with my wide angle lens.  I was able to capture the kayak launch, the park and the view East along the barge canal.  And then I had another idea.  I rotated the camera into a portrait orientation and grabbed five images encompassing about 150 degrees of viewing angle.  This would be a very cool panoramic view.  This allowed me to bring the Mohawk River with the pedestrian bridge into the same view with Bellamy Park and the barge canal.

The last image is my pano.  When setting up to capture your images for a panoramic you have to remember to set your camera to manual mode.  You do not want the camera refocusing or adjusting the settings while you grab each image.  Once I had all five images it was an easy process job using Photoshop to merge them into my final image.

All in all I had a great morning at both ends of Rome, NY.  I even managed to be back home by 6:30am so I could start my laundry.  I know, not very exciting, but at least I can process images while the washing machine does all the work.  Now I have to get those clothes out on the line to dry…  🙂
