Sunset Dock

Lake Haines, FL

After finishing a nice dinner that my Mom cooked I headed down to the dock again for the sunset. It was a beautiful evening with a slight breeze blowing in off the lake. I don’t want to jinx myself but there were no bugs and for a while I just sat on the dock enjoying the end of the day.

Through the Mist & Trees

Pixley Falls State Park

With the unusually long winter and cold spring it has been a slow start to my state park excursions. Pixley Falls is just 20 minutes up the road from me and Sunday was my first visit since it opened. I generally enjoy photographing the small tributary streams as they have a lot more character and interesting compositions for long exposures and silky smooth running water.

Yesterday though I was able to get a nice composition of the main falls through the trees and billowing mist. I had waited just long enough to allow the sun to pass far enough through the sky to not create the usual ‘hot’ spots when trying to photograph this waterfall. I have learned to better expose these scenes so I can get the image I want without having to bracket my exposures.

I’ll be sprinkling the other images into my blog posts as I work on them… 😉

Weekly Photo Challenge: Home

This week’s photo challenge from The Daily Post is Home. Check out the original post here Weekly Photo Challenge. There were numerous approaches to this challenge but I settled on capturing images around my home.

When I started this photographic journey in 2011 I spent quite a lot of my time wandering around the house, the yard and the fields surrounding the house playing with my old point & shoot camera. I learned about light, shadows, perspective, composition, depth of field, exposure and everything I use today when I am out exploring with my camera.

I still find I can walk the fields or even my yard and discover images to capture. I love landscape photography and dream of taking the big trips to capture those iconic images I see everyday on my screen, but home is where I learned and these simple images within walking distance of my house will always evoke the sense of home in me.
