The Skis Perspective
Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs…
My apologies to Five Man Electrical Band as I was singing this song while getting these images ready for this post. Although, I am more familiar with the live version recorded by Tesla and that is how I was attempting to sing (don’t ask!). Anyway, as you might have guessed by now the theme this week was Signs.
I had a few ideas to go capture big signs like fast food signs along commercial roads in town or unique signs for some local businesses. What I decided to do was find some small interesting signs while out doing my normal exploring. Once you start looking for signs, you will be amazed at how many are actually scattered across the landscape. My big problem now is turning that portion of my brain off so I don’t see them while I’m out looking for landscape images. lol
This first image is another view of the bridge in the Holland Patent village park. I posted a side view late last week but the ‘No Snowmobiles’ sign caught my eye as I was trying to compose the image. At first I didn’t understand why because I know the bridge could support the weight, then I realized the skis and treads would chew up the wood. Makes sense now…
The next two images are from a walk I took on Saturday at Delta Lake State Park. What I liked about both of these images is the situational irony (is that even a thing?). The first image proclaims the trail ends here but obviously the snowmobiles continued on. The second image is warning that the beach is closed and swimming is prohibited. I can see why!

Neighbors’ Barns
What a weekend! Left the house Friday morning to bring my daughter back to school. She is going to SUNY Binghamton for Biology. Just a little over 2 hours to get her there, haul everything to her room, take her to lunch and then head out to my Dad’s house. Three hours later I reached Bemus Point and although I had nothing but blue skies for 95% of the trip it is overcast and grey. So much for any exploring with the camera.
Saturday was nothing but snow and wind. The family event I was attending was interesting to say the least but only on account of the weather. Finally made it back to my Dad’s house and settled in to wait for the storm to pass. My only concern then was which path home on Sunday and that would depend on the weather. Mother Nature was nice to me. Clear skies and no snow for the whole trip back home.
But enough about my scenic tour of NY State. This week’s theme was all about barns. I knew I would have some great chances around my Dad’s house but those plans went out the window. I managed to get out around my house Sunday afternoon and tried to be a little more creative. I only took the 55-200mm lens with me. Two reasons really… one was to get some detail images of my next door neighbors barn and secondly, the other barn in view from my house is over a half mile away.
Here is was I came up with…
Shadows
Snow Sports
Yes, the title is a little misleading, but it did get you to investigate this post. The theme this week is square (1×1) format images. Most cameras produce an image that is either a 2×3 format or a 4×3 format. There is a lot of creativity possible by changing your image in another format and I have found the 1×1 format to have a lot of potential. That is evident here on my blog via my Squared series.
On Saturday the weather was absolutely beautiful and I had an idea for some images out in the snow that would utilize this week’s theme. I grabbed as much sports equipment as I could find in the garage and went outside with the camera to create images of the different pieces in the snow. I purposefully waited until I had strong midday light so there would be strong shadows. I thought that would add to each piece. Here are the three best from my little experiment.
I’m not sure this little experiment turned as well as it was envisioned but I had a great time running around the yard utilizing the areas of untouched snow. It also got me off the couch that day and I was quite happy with the Juxtaposition image I posted a few days ago. 🙂
