An Icon

Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

It might seem a little silly but I always start my trips to Walt Disney World by visiting the Magic Kingdom first. A few years ago I arrived at 9:30pm but the park was open until 1:00am so I jumped on the bus and made it home that first day. This trip was no different even though my reasons for coming down would have me at other parks most of the time. Here is a different view (although one I have probably shared before) of the Magic Kingdom’s larger than life icon… Cinderella Castle.

Harper’s Mill

Frontierland, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

Generally, visitors to the Disney theme parks are in a rush to get to the next big attraction. I get that. Not everyone has my fanaticism about Disney nor does everyone have the opportunity to travel there like I do. When we first started going with the kids I was the same way. Drag everybody to the park at opening and don’t leave until you have seen it all. Time was short and there was a lot to do.

Since I have embraced this photography addiction (maybe passion would be better) I see the theme parks differently. I see the amazing detail that is prevalent throughout the parks. The hidden gems, the out-of-the-way nooks only discovered by those few slowing down to truly explore. Maybe it is also part of getting older (yes, I said it!) but I have learned some patience too. This probably comes from the fact that I know I will be back and if I skip something today it will be enjoyed next visit.

One of those exploring gems is Tom Sawyer’s Island in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom. You need to travel to the island by log raft but once you arrive there is a lot to discover. I have spent many an afternoon exploring the island and I know there is still more to find. I’m looking forward to embracing the inner child as I search for my next hidden treasure.

Here is a view of Harper’s Mill on the island from the dock across the Rivers of America…

31 Days to Go

Walt Disney World

Although you probably could not tell by the posts on my blog it has been 10 months since my last trip to my second home (maybe my first home). My plans for an October trip were cancelled due to training for work (training which I just completed last week due to postponements). I changed my plans at Christmas time due to obligations at work (ended up sending the kids by themselves). So I am really starting to get excited for this trip coming up in 31 days. I’ll try not to be too obnoxious about it, but this post can serve as a warning… 😉

When I ended up having to cancel my plans in October I knew exactly the time frame I would plan to return to Disney. There are numerous special events throughout the year at Disney. I’m sure they started in the off season to try and entice visitors to the resorts in the slower parts of the year but have since grown to be expected events that draw very large crowds. In the spring/early summer time frame two events actually overlap by one weekend. The end of the International Flower & Garden Festival and the first of the Star Wars Weekends coincide on May 15,16 & 17 this year. My trip will be from May 13th to the 20th. I will be in Disney/Star Wars nerd heaven… 🙂

Reflecting (anticipating) on this year’s events I have been digging through my old images.  Here are a few from previous events…
