I have such a thing for moving water…

The Rage
The pre-show area of the American Falls in Niagara Falls State Park would have to be the rapids. The energy and raw power of the moving water was mesmerizing. It didn’t help to already have a fascination with water prior to visiting. I had to keep reminding myself to continue the walk to the observation deck, the sun was setting and I was loosing light. This is a section of the rapids about a 100 yards from the falls.
Bellamy Harbor Park
I have a few regular haunts that are not too far from the house. Bellamy Harbor Park is in the south of Rome, NY along the Barge Canal where the Black River enters. Surprisingly I haven’t visited as much as usual this summer. The other night I stopped by and was greeted with plenty of photographic opportunities. Now I don’t know if there just happened to be more going on that night or I have learned to see more of them. 🙂

Squared – SQ07
Another in the Squared series. A small section of the Niagara River just prior to the American Falls. The best view of the falls is from the Canadian side of the river. The traffic was more than I cared to wait through and I had never explored Goat Island which is home to Niagara Falls State Park. I found this little section of turbulent water along a path from Luna Island toward the pedestrian bridge to the observation tower.
Movement
My original intent was to capture a view of the Niagara River with the wonderfully turbulent flow. I liked the lamp post that just turned on as I was walking toward the falls and thought this would be a nice image. There were too many people enjoying the park that night and my plan for a people free image were dwindling.
But then I thought it would be a better image if I included the people. It was late, getting dark and I would be using close to a 1 second shutter so the blurred movement of the people would go with the movement energy of the river.
At least that was my thought…
Calm Against the Rage
On the Pond
Luckily for me I have great neighbors! Otherwise I would be running out of subjects for my images. One of my neighbors has a pond up behind his house and he told me that the water lilies are in bloom. I finally made it over the other morning, although it was an overcast day, to grab a few pictures.
Of course, I had to run back home since the 17-70mm lens didn’t have enough reach. Up until now I have been happy with 200mm being my longest lens considering I mainly capture landscapes or macros. Those stinking lilies were out in the middle of the pond and quite unwilling for a close-up. Either I need that 400mm lens or the D7100 with the extra 1.3 crop feature… lol!
Dunkirk Lighthouse
On Saturday the kids and I headed to my Dad’s house for my nephew’s graduation party on Sunday. The weather when we left home was not that great and the drive along the thruway as we traveled to Bemus Point did not improve until we passed through Buffalo. Along the coast of Lake Erie we were rewarded with a break in the clouds and some beautiful scenery.
I really wasn’t on a set schedule and just had to make it to my dad’s house by 4pm so when we exited at Dunkirk, NY I took a right turn rather then the left. I knew there was a lighthouse on the lake in and considering the nice weather, I went exploring. It was only a 10 minute drive until we arrived at the parking lot for the historic Dunkirk Lighthouse.
The park closed at 2pm on the weekends which only afforded us 25 minutes to explore. I would have loved to take the tour which includes the keepers manor and the lighthouse itself. As it was I ran around trying to capture as much as I could. I definitely will have to make plans for a longer visit the next time I head back to my dad’s house.
