Pangani Forest Exploration Trail

The Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World has never received the respect I think it is due. Most tote the park as a half day visit but if you only invest that much time you are missing out on a plethora of opportunities. Last year in May when I had my first solo photography visit to WDW I discovered areas of the Animal Kingdom I had never seen in any of my previous visits. Now I know to slow down and look in every nook and cranny of this wonderful park.

One of my favorite areas to explore is the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail which is accessed very near the exit for the Kilimanjaro Safari ride. There are an amazing amount of animals on display and for someone with a camera the available views are very natural. On this last visit the gorillas were not afraid of the midday sun and I was able to get some nice images of the adult silverback.

Finally, the Zoo…

I finally managed to finish processing the images from my trip last month to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. A few of these have already made their way into blog posts but I wanted to include them here so everyone can enjoy the whole group. I managed to accumulate quite a few more images than I showcase here but these are my best from that day. Next time I will try using a circular polarizer to reduce any glare on the glass.

Anyone in the central NY area that is interested in visiting the zoo can check out all it has to offer here: Rosamond Gifford Zoo. I was very impressed with the zoo and will definitely be making additional trips out to visit. Maybe I’ll wait for spring so I can get some better outside images…

I Found the Eagles!

I’ve heard the stories. I’ve talked to other photographers. I’ve seen the pictures. Until you actually see them for yourself, none of that other stuff matters. I found the eagles!

The winter storm Nemo did not have the reach everyone originally thought. We received about 6 inches of snow starting last night and definitely ending before I awoke at 4am. I went out early this morning to clear the driveway of the white stuff and contemplated exploring with the camera but I needed it to warm up a little before I ventured outside again. The day did not disappoint!

The sun, which had been on full all day, managed to get the temps up to the mid-twenties so I packed the camera into the car and went exploring. I didn’t have a destination in mind but the need for gas in the car prompted the start of my adventure to be a gas station. The closest being over in Rome I decided to go back to Delta Lake dam and poke around in the fresh snow cover.

My intent was to find some new views of the dam or walk the trails along the Black River to see what caught my eye. After grabbing some interesting images of the turbulent exit flow I spotted a couple down the road staring down river. I wanted to check out the opposite side of the dam area so I wandered in their direction. They were watching a young eagle perched high in a tree along the river. Of course I had the wide angle zoom lens on so I continued my original plan for exploring.

On the way back to the car I noticed the eagle was still sitting in the tree. I swapped lenses for my modest telephoto and headed down the trail along the opposite side of the river hoping to get close enough for a few captures. I now wish I had gotten the 70-300mm lens rather than my 55-200mm. I just didn’t have enough reach. Every time I would almost be close enough the eagle would fly further down stream. I pursued!

Luckily I’m a little stubborn. As I chased the eagle from tree to tree I came upon more perched eagles. I still could not get close enough for a good close-up image but now I know where they like to hang out. I will be making numerous trips back to this area and if I’m lucky I’ll be in the right place at the right time to get some more images of these fantastic birds!

Another image from my trip to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. The snow leopards where quite active so I had a chance for a few nice captures. Of course I wish the glass of the enclosure was a little cleaner… lol!

Contemplation

Thanks to a post earlier this week by Scott Thomas on his Views Infinitum blog (Familiar Faces) about the January photo contest at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY, I spent an enjoyable morning with my daughter exploring all the zoo has to offer. I hadn’t been to this zoo in 15 years but I think I was the biggest kid there!

Here is the first processed image from the day. A Markhor (Capra falconeri) contemplating either the weather or the view, he didn’t say what was on his mind…

Canadians Invade!

Geese that is! Yesterday at work a gaggle of geese invaded our lawn in front of the building. I didn’t get exact numbers but there had to be close to fifty geese. They were fearless! Crossing the driveway in front of cars with no regard for themselves. I sat out under a tree during lunch snapping pictures and they were getting as close as ten feet from me. It was definitely cool but you really had to tread lightly!
