10 & 98 Come Together

Mobile Bay, Alabama

I’m spending a little more time in Mobile, Alabama this weekend for work. Our only opportunity to get our tasks done was this weekend so I flew in on Friday evening. We had a good day yesterday, accomplishing most of our tasks so I had a little time this morning to get out with the camera (yes, I brought it this time!). If we have a good morning today I might go back to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park for better quality pics (fingers crossed).

This morning I stopped where Interstate 10 crosses Route 98 in the middle of Mobile Bay. I was hoping for a little more sunrise color in the sky but the clouds had not yet rolled past. You can see a sliver of orange barely above the interstate. It is all good, I do love me some light reflections on water…

Sliver of Light

Bellamy Harbor Park, Rome, NY

I was driving to my son’s in Albany Sunday morning to help him winterize his new apartment. It is an older house and the colder weather increased the awareness of the drafts within the place. His first attempts by himself were slight unsuccessful. I always had to perform the same tasks around my house so this was an easy assist for me. Plus, he has always been bragging about the places to eat he has found in Albany so I figured my payment could be lunch at one of those places…

The timing of my departure was going to be right at sunrise and I had hoped I would be able to capture something interesting. As I was getting ready to leave I was unsure how the sunrise would unfold as the clouds were making there way across the sky but I did still see a sliver of light along the horizon. I drove to Bellamy Harbor Park and was able to catch a few rays of sunlight before the clouds consumed the sky.

Environmental Education

Green Lakes State Park

The first park I explored last weekend was Green Lakes State Park out in Fayetteville, NY. The early morning light did not do the namesake water its proper justice but I could not resist the way the trees were reflecting. I captured the view of the environmental education building from across the lake as the morning sun did its thing…

Aerial Clayton

Clayton, NY

My friend Justin has a drone. Lately we have been talking about capturing images with it and how to use it to create high dynamic range (HDR) pictures. He had the opportunity this past weekend to explore the area around Clayton, NY while his wife was busy being a bridesmaid. It’s not as bad as it sounds. He wasn’t a part of all the festivities over the weekend which allowed him to fly around in the mornings. He was there for the important evens.

He let me import all his images into Lightroom so I could show him what can be done with all those exposure brackets he captured. We reviewed all the pics during lunch but last night I went to town and processed a few of my favorites (there are more still to work on). Justin doesn’t claim to be a photographer but he has a damn good eye…

Sculptures at Dawn

Griffiss International Sculpture Garden

Yesterday I headed out to capture early morning images. I didn’t have a specific destination in mind but thought I would head down toward Utica and see if any of my normal spots along the way held anything interesting. Really I was going to wander and settle for pot luck.

As I drove through Griffiss Business and Technology Park (they really need a cooler name) I headed over to check out the NYSTEC building that was recently added. I had heard that it is lit up pretty cool. It didn’t disappoint but there was still splotchy patches of grass and the front of the building faces East with the sky behind the building still a little boring. Later. I’ll get that image another time.

On my way out of the park I passed the Griffiss International Sculpture Garden and was reminded how some of the sculptures are illuminated at night. Seeing those sculptures and realizing I could get them silhouetted against the Eastern sky had me turning the car around. It ended up being a great morning…

Low Bridge

Bellamy Harbor Park

Saturday morning was another opportunity for a sunrise picture before the craziness of yard sale weekend was to begin. I jumped down to my ‘go to’ place in Rome about an hour before sunrise. I told myself I would explore more of Bellamy Harbor Park this morning rather than setup in my normal spot and capture one or two images.

I started with the safe image, the wide angle view of the harbor (actually, the spot along the barge canal where the Mohawk River enters) from the West bank near the flow control gates. There was an unusual calm on the water which really helped with the long exposure images. There was also a low fog across the water that I wanted to capture.

I walked along the trail heading East toward the Mill St. bridge. I didn’t really have a plan, but I knew an image would present itself. There is a section along the canal where you can get closer to the water. This allowed me to setup low and use the wooden boat bumpers to lead the eye toward the bridge. The low perspective also highlighted the fog on the surface of the water. I knew I had my morning image.

I walked further along the trail but the sun was approaching the horizon and the color was draining from the sky. It was time to head back and setup for the yard sale. At least the start of the day was fruitful… traffic past the yard sale would determine if the rest of the day was productive.
