Overcast Reflection

NYS Barge Canal

The temperatures are improving today but the weather is still overcast and gloomy. I didn’t let that stop me this morning. After getting my laundry done and having breakfast I ventured out to Bellamy Harbor for some monochrome images. I knew the fog/overcast conditions would lend themselves to monochrome processing.

I even changed it up a little by using the 50mm prime lens rather than my go to zoom (24-70mm). Even with the 50mm view there is plenty of space around the harbor to capture a nice landscape image. I took my time and poked my nose in every corner of the harbor.

Under the bridge heading into Rome you can get right down to the canal. This is the view looking west up the canal. I started with a landscape oriented view but once my eye caught the tree reflection I knew which image I would be working on when I got home.

    • I like the lens but I don’t use it as much as I should. I’m thinking 35mm would be my next prime, especially for walking around street photographer style (which I don’t do but think I should try)… :)

  1. Agree. Though last time, many years ago in NYC, I did street photography I had a little point and shoot that fit in my pocket. I got some great images of people without them knowing. I suppose that isn’t exactly kosher. But I still love the images.

  2. Oh I guess I should’ve read this post first! You had the fog yesterday. Love the reflection. I enjoy how using a prime lens from time to time forces us to remember to zoom with our feet!

    • Yeah, I know I tend to favor my zoom cause they are “easier” but getting me out of my comfort zone with the primes is a good thing for me. I’m a sucker for a good reflection. Thanks.

  3. Nice reflection!
I have a 60mm macro that I absolutely love! To the point that I wore out my previous 60mm macro 😬😄. I did have it for about 10 years.
I think the film camera I confiscated from my husband before digital came along, came with a 50mm. Loved that one, too.
