Odyssey of Dreams

WDW in B&W – WBW32
Future World, Epcot, Walt Disney World

I have been on a bit of a streak with the B&W images of Walt Disney World of late. Probably has nothing to do with the crappy weather up here in Upstate NY. Although I did appreciate the days of almost 60 deg weather, it melted all the snow and left everything looking brown and dirty. Not very photogenic. It did give me a chance to get back to some of the images from last year’s trip that have been waiting for me to process…

Living in a Dream

WDW in B&W – WBW28
Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

Last August when I was in Walt Disney World I finally managed to have good conditions for a sunset behind Cinderella Castle. One of my favorite images is the Castle Sunset image from that trip. I also was able to get the image with the sun peeking out from behind one of the castle’s spires. As I started to process this image it was taking on a dream-like feeling for me and there is no better way for me to convey that feeling than to convert this image to B&W. Toss in a little highlight glow and the Orton effect to complete the dream…

What Lies Within

Squared – SQ138
Delta Lake State Park

My quick run out to Delta Lake on Sunday yielded three images of the sunset before the sun slipped back into the clouds. I wasn’t going to waste this opportunity and I noticed within the ice along the beach there were very interesting patterns. I switched to my macro lens and started exploring. Obviously the ice lends itself well to a monochrome treatment which was my immediate immediately thought when I started to process this image. I also prefer to use the square image format as this is nothing but an abstract image.

Beginning Ice

Delta Lake State Park

The day was mostly overcast. Sunday is typically errand day, get the groceries, hit a few of the warehouse stores and check out anything interesting. The morning started with breakfast and progressed along as I expected. The only surprise was the emergence of the sun about forty five minutes before sunset. I had been itching to get out with the camera and was not going to let this opportunity slide.

I grabbed everything (including my gloves) and headed out. Once I pulled the car out of the parking lot of the townhouses I realized I would be racing the clouds. The sunshine I was experiencing was through a small crack in the cloud cover. My best bet to photograph anything would be up at Delta Lake. I raced my way there as the sun started playing hide-n-seek.

This image is the first capture as I hit the beach. In a couple of minutes the sun was once again hiding behind the clouds. I ended up playing with the macro lens for a few minutes trying to get some close-ups of patterns in the ice stranded on the beach. The wind was beating on me and I hadn’t factored it in when I chose my clothing for this outing.

On my way back to the car I ran into another photographer. He was having a similar problem as he didn’t bring any gloves but wanted to wait until the sun dropped below the horizon. We stood there talking, mostly about his Pentax K-1. I briefly thought about this camera as it would allow me to use my Dad’s old lenses but since I haven’t been able to convince him to let me buy them I had forgotten about it. He confirmed by original thoughts, it is a great camera. Looks like I’ll be calling Dad soon…

We both stayed for a few more minutes and I grabbed a couple more images. I had to get the obligatory image with the bench in the foreground. Every year I manage to sneak another one into my collection. Eventually the wind won and we both headed to our cars. It was nice to chat with a fellow photographer and hopefully I’ll run into him again…

Disney Art

Walt Disney World

In my year in review post I mentioned I currently have a love/hate relationship with Walt Disney World. I am still a fan and I will be taking more trips to the world especially after being rejuvenated by the excellent Disney+ series The Imagineering Story. My current frustration is with the decline in services at the parks and resorts. The little things that use to make the place extra special are slowing going away. Anyway, it could also be an overload condition from way to many trips…

I did a little something different this year as I processed my images. I finally worked out how to turn my favorite images into postcards. I have mentioned this in a few other posts throughout the year but I really stepped it up late in the year. I started with a group of ten images and created a set of postcards. I’m still working out how best to offer them to any interested parties but I wanted to share my results with everyone.

In no particular order here are the original ten cards…
